Getting ready

PREPARATION RESOURCES

🎓

The CA POST Academy

California's Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Academy is the required training program for all new California peace officers. Typical duration is 6+ months full-time.

  • Find POST-certified academies near you at post.ca.gov
  • Topics: law, criminal procedures, use of force, firearms, first aid, driving, ethics
  • Graduation earns your Certificate of Completion
  • BPD also accepts current academy students who apply before graduation
💪

Physical Fitness Preparation

Police work demands physical fitness. A Physical Assessment is part of the hiring process, and you must also pass a medical exam after a conditional offer confirming your fitness for duty. Arrive prepared for both.

  • Cardiovascular endurance: aim to run 1.5 miles in under 15 minutes
  • Upper body strength: push-ups, pull-ups, core stability work
  • Flexibility and coordination exercises for defensive tactics readiness
  • Maintain a consistent training routine throughout the hiring process
  • Sleep, hydration, and recovery matter just as much as the workouts
